What Goes Where if You're Flying

Before packing anything, see the Transportation Safety Administration's list of permitted and prohibited items.

Carry-Ons

You are allowed two carry-ons: one bag and one personal item such as a purse, briefcase or laptop and they must fit overhead and under your seat.
  • See the latest rules for carry-ons before you pack.
  • Beyond those latest carry-on rules you just read up on, you can carry on prescription meds, milk, juice and baby formula in quantities exceeding 3 oz., and they don't have to be in a zip-top bag.
  • Pack all valuables, credit cards, money, documents (except maps), medications, glasses and anything else you can't afford to lose in one carry-on, and all photocopies of your documents in the other carry-on.
  • Lithium batteries, not installed in devices, must go in carry-ons. Limit two.
  • Keep the headset, travel-size hand sanitizer, and reading material with you too.
Checked Luggage

Before packing, get the airline's baggage policy for size, weight and number of checked pieces. This may vary depending on the airline and the size of the airplane.
  • All personal care items such as shampoo, hair gel, toothpaste, lotions, deodorant etc. must travel in your checked luggage. Keep bottles no more than 3/4ths full to avoid leaking due to air pressure. Use Nalgene bottles for maximum safety.
  • Don't pack food, drinks or fragile items.
  • If you're taking gifts, leave then unwrapped.

Bon voyage!
