Southern Caribbean Cruises: Nevis

Separated from St. Kitts by a shallow 2-mile-wide channel, Nevis packs a world of exquisite beauty into its mere 36-square-mile area. A cone-shaped central mountain, Mt. Nevis, with a peak veiled by clouds towers above lush green palm groves, white and black sand beaches, and a rainforest filled with birds, butterflies, and waterfalls. Countless fresh water springs and volcanic hot springs coexist on the gentle coastal plain. Old sugar mills restored as inns complement the stunning natural beauty.

The clouds enshrouding Nevis Peak fooled Christopher Columbus when he landed here in 1498 -- he thought he was looking at snow, inspiring him to name the island “Nuestra de las Nieves,” or “Our Lady of the Snows,” from which “Nevis” evolved.

Long stretches of beach kissed by the unforgettably blue sky abound, including the island’s most popular, the four-mile Pinney’s Beach on the island’s west side. You can ride horseback on the beaches or through the hills, hiking and donkey rides take you along a trail that was once an escape route for runaway slaves, and Herbert Heights features a telescope through which you can peer into a steaming volcano.
